田雞又叫虎紋蛙，喜愛淡水濕地同開闊原野，尤其水稻田等濕耕地。據說田雞口感像雞肉因而得名，亦有說法指田雞在水稻田食害蟲，就如農場的雞一樣，所以又稱之為水雞。
不過由於棲息地減少，過量使用殺蟲水及過度捕捉，令野生群落數目大減，已經被列入國家二級保護動物，本地野生群落則分佈大嶼山及新界。
Chinese Bullfrogs commonly inhabit in wetland especially paddy rice field. Their Chinese name refers to "field chicken" because of their chicken-like texture and function in the field. Yet the wild population is threatened by habitat loss, overuse of pesticide and overconsumption. That makes them endangered in China. Still, the local population distributes widely in Lantau Island and New Territories.
